It is evident from the given case that David maintained an effective relationship
with his peers. He did so by understanding the expectations of the various people
around him and fulfilling the needs accordingly. Citings from the case highlight
the efficient manner and the qualities which contributed to his effective relationships.
Task Force Meeting: David uses humor to get his message across in a
very light manner. He makes Ashby realize his mistake without offending or insulting
him in between the meeting. This is the best technique deal with minor disciplinary
lag. This shows his effective manner to handle such incidents at group meetings.
Relationships with Product Managers: He showed a great tactical skill
in fending of the provocations raised by Ken Self. Rather than getting agitated
he diverted the focus of the group to another issue and brought it back at a
later point to reduce the impact of the counter argument of Ken.
Dealings with Market Research: The Market Research Department thought
that David knew what went on there. David was aware of this fact and deliberately
cultivated this image. This made sure that they always kept on their toes and
to effect this he provided them with business information which could be used
implementing programs. This showed his shrewdness and understanding of the department's
functional attributes.
Dealing with Sales People: He shows tremendous respect for the vast
experience and the age factor of the sales department. He understands that they
expect decision makers and so this is what he delivers. He is aware of the resentment
of the sales people and accepts it pragmatically. This shows his ability to
see the situation from other people's point of view and gaining insight into
the problem.
Meeting with Control Department: Two critical things emerge in his dealing
with the control department. First is that he reaslises where the critical resources
of a department lay. In this case he knows that the capable people would be
young starters and not in the middle level management. Secondly he knows that
he has to act tough to get his job done. This is evident from his dealings with
Dredge where he doesn't accept the excuses but argues for more informative response.
Till the end he made sure that Dredge get back to him with the calculations
he required.
Meeting with Subordinates: Here he shows testing skills which he showed
by analyzing the presentation and asking question at regular intervals to test
their thorough study of the market. He knows that they try hard to please him
and so he does not order them, but gives subtle indications of his requirements.
He also makes sure that there is a lively and amicable relationship between
them which he ensures by discussing issues in a light and friendly manner.
Meeting with Superiors: Knowing the fact that the superiors have a busy
schedule and like candidness he made sure that he was brief and concise in his
approach. He also knew that they welcome learning debates and thus he never
hesitated to disagree whenever he felt he had a valid point. This made sure
that they were on the same wavelength while discussing issues. This reflects
on his adaptive skills which is important for him to fulfill their expectations.
