Directed by: Michael Winterbottom

Starring: Tim Robbins, Samantha Morton

Rated R for a scene of sexuality, including brief graphic nudity

Runtime: 92 min

The movie is not only pointless but also boring and flat. I personally never expected Winterbottom to come up with something so awful. The performances by the characters like Tim Robbins and Samantha Morton are pretty lame. It seems as if they had forgotten to use their abilities for this movie.

The set up of the movie is in the future. It is an age where a couple can have a child only if their DNA is matched, otherwise you become violator of Code 46. The abortion would be imposed and all the memory of the incident will be erased. Robbins plays William who is a fraud investigator. He is sent to Shanghai to investigate the illegal manufacture and sale of travel "papelles." Papelles is the paperwork by which someone can travel from one "zone" to another. There he meets Maria played by Morton, and falls in love with her. He hides her crime and as a result of their passionate relationship she gets pregnant. William heads back home but constantly thinks about the good time spent by them. His efforts to see her again are failed as his papers to travel are refused. He somehow manages to use some fake papers and finds out that she has been caught for the violation of Code 46.

The movie makes us travel from Seattle to Shanghai to Dubai to Jaipur, which flavors the movie with different languages like English mostly, Spanish, French, Chinese and Arabic. What is really disappointing for me was the use of today's cars model in the movie which has the futuristic theme.

It is a low budget science fiction. Code 46 is an interesting science fiction knit with love story. It is too slow a movie to interest fans of movies like The Matrix. But still the movie has some positive points to survive on the big screen. It has beautiful visuals. It becomes really pleasant with it amazing ethereal songs by Coldplay and Milla Jovovich. It does have a power to keep your mind and heart engaged.
