After a tremendous success from "Passion of the Christ" Mel Gibson
is back in the news with "Paparazzi" a thriller produced by
Gibson and directed by his hairdresser, Paul Abascal. The film tries to reflect
the sleaziness and the lows that the modern day paparazzi will do to get a photo
for an easy buck.
Bo Laramie (Cole Hauser) is Hollywood's new rising action star. He and his
wife Abby (Robin Tunney) are enjoying the new ride of success, when a gang of
paparazzi led by Rex Harper (Tom Sizemore) a National Enquirer veteran and other
photographers turn their life into a living hell.
It is a group of people who would do anything to get new information and news
on the famous. If they fail to get the stuff they would to extremes of making
it up. There new victim is Bo who does not get bothered at first when he finds
himself and his family surrounded by paparazzi like hawks all the time, but
he losses his control when the swarm invades his son's soccer game. He punches
out one of the member of the paparazzi team and other gets a picture of it.
Now this things flares up further with the paparazzi taunting the big film star
and crossing every line of decency with every photo opportunity. Limit stops
when Bo's wife gets hurt in an accident and their son end up in coma. Now the
movie takes turn into revenge plot.
Mel Gibson, who produced this movie, does a funny guest appearance in the office
of an anger management therapist. You would also see Chris Rock playing a pizza
delivery driver. And Vince Vaughn, on the set of the latest Bo Laramie movie,
plays his delightful self.
Paparazzi is a wonderful idea which was never shown on big screen on such
extremes. It suggests that celebrity is the prey of the predatory media. But
movie has some weak points to be a big hit on the big screen. The movie lacks
the seriousness that might have made it interesting. It is not that Paparazzi
is not an entertaining movie, it that it turns out to be funny which is because
of the weaknesses in the production. There are many scenes in the film which
are not meant to be funny but they make you laugh anyways loud.
