There's this high school science teacher, Jessica Martin (Kim Basinger), who's
kidnapped from her suburban home by a thug named Greer (Jason Statham), a vicious
criminal who has threatened to murder her husband and son if he doesn't get what
he wants. She is held hostage in a musty attic helpless and unable to escape.
Jessica has no access to the working phone where she is held hostage, but she
manages to put the pieces together and is able to make a random number.
It's the cell phone of Ryan (Chris Evans), a laid-back California student who
is chilling off with his pal at the Santa Monica pier. At first he doesn't believe
when Jessica tells him about the gravity of the situation, but she gradually succeeds
to convince him about the whole thing.
Getting the pulse of the complete situation he intends to help her. He tries not
to lose connection with her and report to a police station. Desk Sgt. (William
H. Macy) on being informed about the kidnapping does not bother to take the matters
in his own hands. Without wasting anytime he takes off to save both Jessica and
her 11 year-old son who's been stashed away in a garage. The story has a twist
associated with the new world modern technology the cell phone which is the only
way to stay in touch with Jessica begins to die. She does not know where she is
held and now Ryan has the responsibilities of their lives.
Cellular has a ridiculous script where electronic data shown to be the
only thing to save a woman and her son's life. It has been stretched too long
on some sequences and dragged unnecessarily.
Cellular is written by Chris Morgan, which is based on another telephone based
story conceived by Larry Cohen Phone Booth. Cellular is basically has nothing
new to serve with, it is yet another movie with a bigger budget and a couple
of significant actors. The movie has some action scenes but it might leave some
audience dissatisfied.
