Goto Start Menu > Run

Type regedit and press the enter key.

In the registry editor window that opens, click on HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE in the left pane.

Follow it to -

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\explorer\Desktop\NameSpace\

below NameSpace, you'll see long CLSID strings like {xxxxxxxx-xxxx-xxxx-xxxx-xxxxxxxxxxxx}

Clicking on any of them will reveal it's name in the right pane.

Just select the one you need to remove and press the DELETE key.
Close the registry editor window.
Right click on desktop and select "refresh".

Many thanks this worked well to remove the icon of a Sony Ericsson File Manager which had been lingering for far too long.

I've got this icon on my desktop and I've tried the regedit way and it doesn't even show up, The Icon is some random numbers and letters, 0 bytes in size and it just refuses to be deleted... virus.. bug? I'm exhausted trying everythign I can think of... I'm about to lose my mind lol please help? It says I can't delete it because another program is in use of it or another person. Which is b.s. I have no idea where it came from. so.. yeah...

It worked perfectly.
I was disturbed long time ago by a desktop icon for a program I installed and still use.
Today -thank god- I removed the disturbing icon without removing the program.

Thank you very much.
