The Cottage: novel by Danielle Steel

This is another entertaining novel from Danielle Steel which leaves reader curious until the very end. It is, like any Danielle Steel's novels, is an easy reading. It has a great magnetic power which keeps reader involved in the plot through out the story.

This is a story which has three men characters, around which the plot is woven. The story begins with their introduction and slowly in their lives. Cooper Winslow is a 70 years old ex-Hollywood star. He is handsome, single and charming who is popular amongst younger women circle. One of his many qualities which attract him to women younger than him is that he is a spendthrift and does not mind spending big amounts of money on his date. But now, he is struggling to keep his financial position safe which is necessary if he wants to keep enjoying the same life style and standard of living. His attorney, Mark, has advised him against all kinds of unnecessary expenditure and suggests him to rent two different portions of the mansion.

Mark and Jimmy are new renters of the two different sections of the house. Mark got a divorce when his wife leaves him for another man and Jimmy is a social worker who has lost his wife to an illness. Mark moves in first and becomes friends with Jimmy from the very first day. Cooper Winslow is not yet bothered by his new renters and stays busy in different women. Mark and Jimmy see him on the TV and talks about his discuss his interest in women.

Things start to take a different form when Cooper Winslow brings Alex, 28-year-old medical resident who is wealthy and happens to be a possessor of a big trust fund. Alex has a good time with Cooper and is friendly with his neighbors, Mark and Jimmy. Alex loves children and is liked by Mark's children when they move in with Mark. Cooper hates children but soon his life takes a big turn which changes him.

One day Cooper discovers that he has a daughter from his very old affair who wants to meet him. After meeting with her daughter his perception changes and he starts to enjoy the company of his only child. He is having a good time with Alex and can share his thoughts and his heart with his daughter, who seems to understand exactly what he says.

Mark meets with an accident and he is critical situation. Alex makes sure that he gets all the attention to get well. She not only takes care of him but also comforts Mark's mother who has been called to come see mark. Mark gets well and Alex sees more of him after Cooper blows Alex with a bad news. Cooper says good-byes to Alex because he is no longer comfortable dating Alex who is very younger than him and is in a better financial position. He does not want to marry her for her money and he is not sure if he would love her same if she was without the money.

Alex and Mark like each other and start to think about their future together. On the other hand Cooper and Mark's mother are hitting off and seem to be sharing the same taste. Cooper's daughter wants to settle with Jimmy who is a good man and loves her a lot. Every body is happy and has met the right people.

It is a nice novel with an intriguing story plot, characters are interesting and to some extent true too. This book introduces some characters which change at the end because of some unexpected turns and choices in their way. It is a must read for Danielle Steel's fan and people who want to start reading her work.
