Wells, H G (Herbert George) (1866-1946) - English author known for his
science fiction, his satirical novels, and his popular accounts of history
and science. He is regarded as the first great writer of science fiction.
The War of the Worlds (1898) - A well-known science fiction novel about a
Martian invasion of England. Orson Welles' equally well-known 1938 radio
dramatization of this story caused widespread panic in the U.S.
