Vanity of Vanities E-book Author: Michael Wigglesworth Genre: Literature, Poetry
Wigglesworth, Michael (1631-1705) English-born, American poet,
clergyman and doctor. After graduating from Harvard at the age of
twenty, Wigglesworth went on to work as a Congregational minister
and physician in Malden, Massachusetts. Rev. Wigglesworth was the
most widely read poet of early New England; his subject matter and
style are most representative of his time. With the exception of Anne
Bradstreet, he was the most prolific poet of his time.
Vanity of Vanities (1715) This poem was first appended to the third
edition of Wigglesworth's masterpiece "The Day of Doom" in 1673.
Included here is its printing from the poem's fifth edition of 1715.
It opens with the lines: Vain, frail, short-lived, and miserable Man,
Learn what thou art when thy estate is best.
