Mill, John Stuart (1806-1873) - English philosopher and economist who was a
leading proponent of Utilitarianism and a supporter of women's suffrage.
Mill's best-known works were influenced by his wife, Harriet Taylor, to
whom he attributed his understanding of the human side of his reforms.
Utilitarianism (1863) - Utilitarianism was the term coined by Mill to
state his doctrine that a right action is one that makes for "the greatest
happiness of the greatest number." This essay explicitly states his theory.
