The Upanishads (800 BC-500 BC) - The first philosophical work of the Hindu
faith. The "Upanishads" form the later portions of the "Vedas," the basis
of the popular Hindu religions. "Upanishad" is said to denote the knowledge
of the impersonal self, the science of absolute being, and any treatise
imparting that knowledge. This well-known translation by F. Max Muller of
the most important "Upanishads" is from the "Sacred Books of the East."
