Trust of a Godly Woman E-book Author: Margaret Winthrop Genre: Literature
Winthrop, Margaret (c. 1591-1647) English-born wife of Massachusetts
Bay Colony Governor, John Winthrop. A noted letter-writer, her
correspondence began several years before her arrival in America.
Comprised mostly of letters to family members, her writings reveal her
acceptance of Puritan attitudes toward women. Mrs. Winthrop's letters
are important contributions to our understanding of the Puritan
settlement in the New World through the eyes of a woman.
The Trust of a Godly Woman (1637) A letter written to Governor John
Winthrop, Mrs. Winthrop's husband. A troubled Mrs. Winthrop expresses
her love for her husband and her faith in God. "Sad thoughts possess my
spirits, and I cannot repulse them," she writes, finding herself "not
so willing to submit to the will of God as I desire."
