writer of Middle English, Chaucer held several diplomatic
offices, including Controller of Customs. His Canterbury
Tales, a collection of stories told by pilgrims en route
to Canterbury Cathedral, is considered his greatest work.
Troilus and Criseyde (1385) Based on Boccaccio's Il
Filostrato, this tale centers around two ill-fated lovers
during the time of the Trojan War. The poem addresses the
convention of courtly love and infidelity.
