Cervantes, Miguel De (1547-1616) Spanish novelist, dramatist and
poet, whose reputation as one of the world's greatest writers rests
almost entirely on his most famous work, "Don Quixote".
The Little Gypsy (1613) "The Little Gypsy" is one of Cervantes "Exemplary
Novels"- that is, one of his "Novelas Ejemplares" or short-stories
published in 1613. It tells the story of Juan de Carcamo who falls in
love with a beautiful and virtuous 15-year-old Gypsy named Preciosa who
demands that he leave his family and friends behind and join with her
Gypsy tribe. The story gives a fine presentation of Gypsy life.
