James Fenimore Cooper (1789-1851) American novelist, social critic, and
historian. Expelled from Yale in 1805, Cooper became a midshipman in the
navy a year later. From this experience, he would later write America's
first sea novel, "The Pilot" (1823). (He had already achieved prominence
with his second novel, "The Spy".) With the publication of "The Pioneers"
in 1823, and off and on for the next 18 years thereafter, he composed the
famous five-volume work, "The Leatherstocking Tales".
The Last of the Mohicans (1826) The second of five novels that in the
series called "The Leatherstocking Tales". The action centers about two
British sisters, Alice and Cora Monro and their attempt to join up their
father, the commanding officer of Fort William Henry in Upstate New York
during the French and Indian War. The villain of the piece is an sinister
Indian named Magua. Opposing him are Natty Bumpo, Chingachgook,
and his son, Uncas. The novel has been twice adapted to film.
