Tao Te Ching E-book Author: Tzu Lao Genre: Literature, Poetry
Aside from a few legends, nothing is really known for certain about Lao Tzu.
It is even debatable whether or not he is the author of the Tao Te Ching.
Even the date traditionally given for his birth (570 B.C.) is disputed. It
is said that when he was an old man about to retire deep into the mountains,
someone convinced him to write down the knowledge he had acquired over
his lifetime. The result is the book generally attributed to him called the
Tao Te Ching or "The Book of the Way and its Power."(c. 500 B.C.)
The Tao Te Ching, usually translated as The Book (or Classic) of the Way
and its Power (or Virtue)" is the poetic, seminal text of Taoism, a
Chinese Philosophy and Religion. In the words of Arthur Waley, Tao is
"The unchanging unity underlying a shifting plurality. The primal unity
underlying apparent multiplicity." Tao is the ultimate, timeless,
inexhaustible source of reality from which all things flow. The
book teaches one how best to live in harmony with this "Vital Spirit"
underlying all Nature.
