Sun Tzu (c. 534 BC - c. 473 BC)In Chinese, Sun Tzu is both the name
of the author as well as the title of the book. The work is
translated into English as The Art of War. The author, Sun Tzu,
(also known as Sun Wu) was a younger contemporary of Confucius
and was born in the State of Qi into the noble Chen clan.
Appointed by the king of the state of Wu, he planned strategies
that brought about the downfall of the states of Chu, Yue, and Qi.

Although The Art of War is composed of only about 6,000 Chinese
characters, it is considered by many to be the greatest book on
strategy and strategic thinking ever written. Interestingly, there
is no mention anywhere in the work of defensive warfare. The
translator for this edition is Lionel Giles.
