Thoreau, Henry David (1817-1862) - American writer, transcendentalist, and
naturalist whose journal was the source of all his writings. Thoreau
published only two books during his lifetime but has since grown to be
regarded as an important literary figure.
Slavery in Massachusetts (1854) - An essay that was originally delivered as
a speech. Thoreau urges the repeal of the Fugitive Slave Law, argues against
racism, and expresses his rage against the public's lack of concern.
