Conrad, Joseph (1857-1924) - Polish-born English novelist who did not learn
to speak English until he was in his twenties. Conrad was best known in
his day as a teller of sea stories; his technique and style have since come
to be recognized as influential in the development of the modern novel.
The Secret Sharer (1912) - A young captain on his first command hides and
saves a fugitive murderer from another ship anchored nearby. The captain
refers to the murderer, his psychological double, as his "second-self."
