Frances Eliza Hodgson Burnett (1849-1924) writer of children's stories
was born in England and, in 1865, came to the United States.
Published That Lass o' Lowries in 1877 and, her most famous work,

(1881) (a play written with William Gillette), and the fictional
works, Sara Crewe (1888), A Little Princess (1905), The Shuttle
(1907), The Secret Garden (1911), and a supernatural work, The
White People (1917
Sara Crewe (1888) or, What Happened at Miss Minchin's is the story of the
daughter of a rich businessman who suffers poverty after her father
dies penniless. She ends up living in an attic and is forced to
rely on her imagination to distract herself from her desperate
plight. Ultimately, Sara's determination and resilience pay off.
