Romance of Pocahontas E-book Author: John Smith Genre: History / Biography, Literature
Smith, John (1579-1631) Englishman who came to America as a soldier of
fortune in 1607. Smith served as president of the governing council of
Virginia and is recognized as that state's first historian. After a
return to England, he came back to America and became known as the
"Admirall of New England," where his plans to plant a colony were never
realized. A story-teller, posterity views many of Smith's supposedly
factual tales as inventions of the author.
The Romance of Pocahontas (1624) An excerpt from "The Generall Historie
of Virginia, New-England, and the Summer Isles." This legendary tale,
Smith's best-known work, changes the factual details of the Indian
capture he described in his "True Relation." Here Pocahontas, the
Indian chieftain Powhatan's daughter, saves Smith from execution by
throwing herself over his body and begging for his life. Though an
often-told story, it is likely not true.
