Burns, Robert (1759-1796) - Scottish poet who has been referred to as
"Scotland condensed in a personality." Raised in extreme poverty, he became
a social as well as a literary sensation upon the publication of his early
poems. Burns is best known for his songs written in the Scottish vernacular.
