Stendhal (pen name of Marie Henri Beyle) (1783-1842) - French novelist and
biographer, considered one of France's greatest writers. He was a soldier
under Napoleon and was later appointed consul at Trieste and Civitavecchia.
The Red and the Black (1830) - Stendhal's most popular work was based on an
actual event he read about in the "Gazette des Tribunaux." This realistic
novel is known for its psychological study of its protagonist, the young
romantic Julien Sorel, and its satire of 19th century Restoration society.
