mathematician, he was one of the founders of hydronamics and of the
mathematical theory of probability. He was also a profound philosophical

Provincial Letters (1656-57) - A series of letters defending Jansenism, a
sect of Roman Catholicism, against charges of heresy by the Jesuits.
Pascal gracefully ridicules the Jesuits for their lax, unchristian views.
