James, William (1842-1910) American psychologist, philosopher,
and physiologist. The brother of Henry James. He taught at
Harvard (from 1872) and wrote a number of works on psychology,
theology, ethics and metaphysics.
Pragmatism(1907): A New Name for Some Old Ways of Thinking is
dedicated to the memory of John Stuart Mill. James also gives
credit to John Dewey and F.C.S. Schiller, the author's major
influences. The work is a compilation of a series of lectures
delivered by William James in Boston on the subject of the
philosophy of Pragmatism. The eight lectures include such
subjects as What Pragmatism Means, Pragmatism and Common
Sense, Pragmatism's Concept of Truth, Pragmatism and Humanism,
and Pragmatism and Religion.
