Joyce, James (1882-1941) - Irish novelist and short-story writer known for
his innovative writing technique. Joyce was the first to extensively use
the interior monologue and stream of consciousness in narrative fiction.
A Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man (1916) - An autobiographical novel
narrated in the stream of consciousness style which Joyce was instrumental
in developing. It is the story of the spiritual growth of Stephen Dedalus,
a sensitive young artist who rejects the narrow world of his upbringing.
