Wheatley, Phillis(1753-1784) African-born American poet, she was the
first African-American woman writer. Bought as a slave by a merchant, she
demonstrated unusual intelligence as a youth and was given an education. Her
poems, well-received at home and abroad, were praised by George Washington.
