Cooper, James Fenimore (1789-1851) - American novelist best known for his
Leatherstocking Tales, five novels which follow the life of the American
frontiersman, Natty Bumppo. Despite his often poor literary craftsmanship,
Cooper was the first American novelist to gain international fame.
The Pathfinder: or, The Inland Sea (1840) - Chronologically the third of
"The Leatherstocking Tales," it portrays Natty Bumppo, the Pathfinder, at
the age of forty. Its action takes place in the Lake Ontario region in 1760.
