Behn, Aphra (1640-1689) - Restoration dramatist, novelist, and poet; she
was the first English woman to earn her living as a writer. Behn served as
a spy in Antwerp and was imprisoned for a time for debt.
Oroonoko or the Royal Slave (1688) - Behn's best-known work of prose is the
story of a prince turned slave. She based this story on the adventures of
the real Prince Oroonoko whom she knew during her residence in Surinam,
West Indies.
