Thomas Morton- English-born Anglican trader and Adventurer who
came to America and settled in 1625 at Ma-re-Mount, (Merry Mount)
the site of what is now Quincy, Massachusetts. Arrested by Myles
Standish (who viewed him as a profligate), he was sent back to
England on the charge of trading liquor and gunpowder with the
Indians. Upon his return, he again suffered arrest (on a pretext),
imprisonment, and exile. He wrote "New English Canaan, (published
in Amsterdam in 1637) and, in 1645, settled in Maine where he died.
On a Vision and a Battle (1637)
Taken from Morton's "New English Canaan," On a Vision and a Battle
describes the consequences of a shameful incident where the British
planters of Plymouth Colony desecrate the grave of the mother of
the Indian chief, Chautawback. Especially notable is the formality
of the language used by the chief to describe his vision.
