Dickens, Charles (1812-1870) - The most popular and perhaps greatest
English novelist and short-story writer, he drew on his experiences as a
poor child to produce extremely realistic stories.
Oliver Twist (1838) - A novel depicting the horrors of life in a 19th
century workhouse and the relation between poverty and crime. One of
Dickens' most popular works, Oliver Twist is the story of a foundling born
in the workhouse who commits the unspeakable crime of asking for more gruel.
