Of Liberty and Authority E-book Author: John Winthrop Genre: Government / Economics, History / Biography
Winthrop, John (1588-1649) English-born, American Puritan leader and
twelve-time governor of the Massachusetts Bay Colony. He was, more than
any other man, the founder of the colony and was influential in shaping
the character of early New England. An earnest Puritan, he argued
against the idea of a democratic government, but was evidently a just,
businesslike governor. He is portrayed fictionally in Hawthorne's "The
Scarlet Letter."
Of Liberty and Authority (1645) This address in the Assembly of 1645 is
an excerpt from Winthrop's "History of New England." A valuable record
of the time, the "History" was not a true history, but rather
Winthrop's journal which he maintained tirelessly from 1630 until his
death. Here Winthrop speaks to his piers of "the great questions that
have troubled the country, about the authority of the magistrates
and the liberty of the people."
