Of Beelzebub and His Plot E-book Author: Cotton Mather Genre: Literature, Religion / Mythology / Sacred, Supernatural
Mather, Cotton (1663-1728) American writer and theologian. The son of
Increase Mather and the grandson of Richard Mather, Cotton entered
Harvard at the age of twelve and, like his father and grandfather
before him, went on to become a clergyman. Cotton Mather is often
regarded as the epitome of Puritan fanaticism; his reputation as an
egoist has outlasted his reputation as a scholar. He was a prolific
writer who wrote on a great number of subjects.
Of Beelzebub and His Plot (1693) Four excerpts from "The Wonders of the
Invisible World," one of Mather's best-known works focusing on witches
and the supernatural. Included here, along with the title piece, are
"The Trial of George Burroughs," "How Martha Carrier was Tried," and
"The Invisibilizing of Witches." The last piece focuses on what Mather
calls the grievously vexing trick of witches "to render themselves,
and their tools invisible."
