Cather, Willa (1873-1947) - American novelist who spent her youth among the
pioneers in Nebraska. Her high regard for the courageous pioneers led to her
increasing distaste for the modern world. She won a Pulitzer Prize in 1923.
O Pioneers! (1913) - When Alexandra Bergson's father dies, she must take
over the care of her family and of the family farm. Cather's second novel
and the first to be set in Nebraska, "O Pioneers!" is dominated by its
main character's devotion to the land.
