Raleigh, Sir Walter (1552-1618) - English explorer, poet, and writer of
prose who was a favorite of Queen Elizabeth. He was later imprisoned on a
charge of treason, released, then executed for attacking a Spanish town.
The Nymph's Reply to the Shepherd (1600) - This reply to Marlowe's "The
Passionate Shepherd to His Love" appeared originally in "England's Helicon,"
signed "Ignoto." It is generally attributed to Raleigh. Opening lines: If
