Night in the Forest E-book Author: John Winthrop Genre: History / Biography
Winthrop, John (1588-1649) English-born, American Puritan leader and
twelve-time governor of the Massachusetts Bay Colony. He was, more than
any other man, the founder of the colony and was influential in shaping
the character of early New England. An earnest Puritan, he argued
against the idea of a democratic government, but was evidently a just,
businesslike governor. He is portrayed fictionally in Hawthorne's "The
Scarlet Letter."
A Night in the Forest (1649) Eight excerpts from Winthrop's "The
History of America from 1630 to 1649," the journal he began while en
route to America and maintained until a few months before his death.
The title piece concerns a night spent alone in the forest after
wandering off the path while walking after dinner. Other excerpts
include a look at a Puritan school-master, a Puritan opinion of
literary women, and a discourse on educating Indians.
