American abolitionist, journalist, and orator. Born in Maryland,
the son of a slave and a white father, Douglass escaped to
Massachusetts in 1838 where he lectured against slavery. Later
forced to flee to England and Ireland, he returned with enough
money to purchase his freedom. Founded The North Star, an
antislavery newspaper. Published Narrative of the Life of
Frederick Douglass, an American Slave (1845), raised two Black
Civil War regiments and (1889-91) served as minister to Haiti.
