Historical Document
Mecklenburg Declaration of Independence (1775) - Written by the committeemen
of Mecklenburg County, North Carolina and published in 1819, this document
is generally looked at as a compilation of recollections of the committeemen
from 1775. When first published, it led some to believe that Jefferson may
have been guilty of plagiarism when writing The Declaration of Independence,
but it became clear that he had never heard of it before 1819.
