Maria, or the Wrongs of Woman was written and revised during a 12-
month period by Mary Wollstonecraft and later published the year
after her death by William Godwin, her husband and the work'editor.
The novel's main object is, in the author's words, "the desire of
exhibiting the misery and oppression, particular to women, that
arise out of the partial laws and customs of society.
