Flaubert, Gustave (1821-1880) - French novelist and leader of the naturalist
school. Obsessed with the craft of writing, he was one of the most exacting
and distinctive literary stylists of the 19th century.
Madame Bovary (1856) - One of the more important works in the development
of the novel, marked by Flaubert's precise detailed descriptions. This book,
the story of an ordinary woman unhappily married to a dull young doctor,
brought legal prosecution against Flaubert on the grounds of immorality.
