Conrad, Joseph (1857-1924) - Polish-born English novelist who did not learn
to speak English until he was in his twenties. Conrad was best known in
his day as a teller of sea stories; his technique and style have since come
to be recognized as influential in the development of the modern novel.
Lord Jim (1900) - Conrad's best-known novel is the story of a man who
dreams of heroic acts but is tormented by secret fears. It is the study of
one man's lifelong quest to atone for an act of cowardice.
