Hobbes, Thomas (1588-1679) - An English philosopher who is sometimes
called the father of materialism. Hobbes believed that all knowledge
comes by way of the senses.
Leviathan (1651) - A treatise on the origin and ends of government that
contains Hobbes' famous theory of the sovereign state. Leviathan has been
referred to as the greatest masterpiece of English political philosophy.
