Sinclair, Upton (1878-1968) - American writer and politician. Sinclair,
running on the famous EPIC (End Poverty in California) platform, narrowly
lost the 1934 race for Governor of California. He was a staunch socialist.
The Jungle (1906) - Sinclair's most famous novel follows the struggles of
Lithuanian immigrant Jurgis Rudkus and his family as they try to make a
living in the Chicago stockyards. This brutally realistic novel shocked the
public and influenced the passing of the Pure Food and Drug Act.
