Hardy, Thomas (1840-1928) English novelist who initially wanted to be a
poet but turned to novel writing when he could not get his poems published.
Hardy, who wished to be remembered merely as "a good hand at a serial,"
returned to writing poetry after earning enough money to forego fiction.
Jude the Obscure (1894)
Thomas Hardy's last and perhaps greatest novel, "Jude the Obscure" tells
the tragic tale of the stonemason Jude Fawley and his unhappy marriage to
Arabella Donn and his love for his cousin, Sue Bridehead. It is a
pessimistic story of poverty, murder, the battle between the flesh and
the spirit, and "the tragedy of unfulfilled aims".
