John Adams's Monarchical Ideas E-book Author: Mercy Warren Genre: History / Biography
Warren, Mercy (1728-1814) American playwright, poet and historian,
Mercy Otis Warren wrote a number of satirical dramas critical of
British rule in America. A friend of many of the best-known
personalities of her time, Mrs. Warren filled her loosely written
"History of the American Revolution" with biographical sketches. This
extremely popular work furnished the average New Englander of the time
their knowledge of the revolution.
John Adams' Monarchical Ideas (1878) A letter Mrs. Warren wrote to John
Adams in 1807, first published in 1878. Here Warren defends an earlier
assertion she made that Adams was partial to a Monarchical government.
She recounts a number of conversations she had with Adams after his
return from Europe in 1788 to support her argument. Her opinion, she
said, is not formed from vague rumor, "but from my own judgment and
observation."
