James, Henry (1843-1916) American novelist and short-story writer who
is known as an artistic literary craftsman. His great themes were the
relationship between innocence and experience and the attainment of
self-knowledge. Brother of William James.
In the Cage (1898)
A tale of about 40,000 words concerning a unnamed young woman of
modest means who works "in the cage" of a telegraph office. She
becomes interested in a certain Captain Everard, a wealthy and
handsome man who is one of the telegraph office's frequent
customers.
