How He Testified in the Meeting Against Slavery E-book Author: John Woolman Genre: History / Biography
Woolman, John (1720-1772) American Quaker clergyman and reformer.
Woolman, a New Jersey tailor, traveled throughout the colonies
preaching against slavery; he also advocated a just Indian policy. His
"Journal" is a classic of its genre, offering visions of reform well
ahead of his time.
How He Testified in the Meeting Against Slavery (1774) Four excerpts
from Woolman's "Journal," published in 1774 in "The Works of John
Woolman," and later edited by John Greenleaf Whittier, a fellow Quaker.
Included along with the title piece are "An Exercise Concerning Dyed
Garments," "An Angelic Dispensation," and "On the Keeping of Slaves."
Woolman emphasized duties rather than doctrine throughout his work, an
attitude held dear by the Society of Friends.
