Genre: History / Biography

Crevecoeur, Hector de (1735-1813) A pseudonym of Michel Guillaume Jean de Crevecoeur, he also wrote under the pen name J. Hector St. John. The French born author is best known for a popular series of essays, written in letter form, collectively known as "Letters from an American Farmer." He traveled extensively through Canada, the Great Lakes region and Pennsylvania before settling on a farm in New York. Crevecoeur served as French consul in 1783. The Happy Farmer (1782) Three entries from Crevecoeur's "Letters from an American Farmer," including "The American," "Nantucket Customs a Century Ago," and the title piece. Crevecoeur saw America as a refuge for Europe's dispossessed.
