Crevecoeur, Hector de (1735-1813) A pseudonym of Michel Guillaume Jean de
Crevecoeur, he also wrote under the pen name J. Hector St. John. The French
born author is best known for a popular series of essays, written in letter
form, collectively known as "Letters from an American Farmer." He traveled
extensively through Canada, the Great Lakes region and Pennsylvania before
settling on a farm in New York. Crevecoeur served as French consul in 1783.
The Happy Farmer (1782) Three entries from Crevecoeur's "Letters from an
American Farmer," including "The American," "Nantucket Customs a Century
Ago," and the title piece. These letters, dealing with 18th century farm
life, were instantly successful. George Washington, who ultimately admired
the work, once described the "Letters" as "too flattering" to be accurate.
Crevecoeur saw America as a refuge for Europe's dispossessed.
