Hamilton and Adams E-book Author: Thomas Jefferson Genre: Literature
Jefferson, Thomas (1743-1826) The third president of the United States.
In the election of 1800, he tied with Aaron Burr in electoral votes and
was chosen president by the House of Representatives. Prior to his term
as president, Jefferson served as the wartime governor of Virginia and
served a short stint as Washington's secretary of state. Of all early
American leaders, Jefferson was the first to leave a substantial
literary record of his life.
Hamilton and Adams (1818) This essay on Alexander Hamilton and John
Adams is excerpted from "The Anas.," the title Jefferson gave to a vast
compilation of his notes and memorandums. Jefferson's long-standing
differences with Hamilton, both personal and political, forced him to
resign his position as secretary of state under Washington in 1793.
Jefferson and Adams, meanwhile, reconciled their political differences
and carried on a significant correspondence.
