Verne, Jules (1828-1905) French novelist known as "the man who invented
the future." He created a unique blend of science and adventure in his very
popular and scientifically prophetic stories. A precursor of modern science
fiction, he influenced the work of H.G. Wells, among others.
From the Earth to the Moon (1865) "From the Earth to the Moon"
is the first part of a two-part story about a moon journey. (The
second part is called "Around the Moon". The tale deals with
three main characters- Barbicane, Nicholl, and Ardan- who are
fired from a 900-foot cannon in a ten-ton space capsule.
