English essayist, literary critic, and friend of Coleridge and
Wordsworth. Studied for the ministry and tried portrait painting
before publishing Principles of Human Action (1805), Characters of
Shakespeare's Plays, and Reply to Malthus (both 1817). Also
contributed to newspapers and periodicals and delivered lectures.
Wrote Table Talk (1821), Spirit of the Age ((1825) and Life of
Napoleon Bonaparte (1828-1830). Two failed marriages. Died in
poverty and ill health. Last words: "Well, I've had a happy life."

Macbeth, Othello, Hamlet, Lear, and Falstaff and some of
Shakespeare's heroines. He also surveys Shakespeare's Midsummer
